Common Name: Red and Green Macaw

Scientific Name: Ara chloropterus

Type: Birds

Diet: Herbivorous

Size: 88cm from its crimson head to the tip of its tapered tail, and weighing in at between 1.15kg to 1.58kg.

Average Lifespan: 60 - 65 years

Origin: South Central & South America

Conservation Status: Not extinct

Physical Description

  • The green-winged macaws are in red and with blue back and rump.

  • Their long tails are tipped with blue with dark green upper wings.

  • They have horn-coloured upper beak and black lower beak.

  • They have gray legs.

  • Both gender are similar in size, weight and colour. There are no obvious differences between the sexes, not even by their plumage or physical indicators.

Tropical forest, Savanna, Mangroves

  • The Green-winged macaws are the second largest parrots after The Hyacinth macaws.

  • They are normally monogamous. which means they only will have one partners in their entire life,

  • In the wild, macaws often flock to mountains of clay known as "macaw licks." Such licks contain minerals and salts essential to the bird's diet.

  • Macaws are able to reach speeds of up to 56 kph (35 mph).

  • Very young Green-wings have a shorter tail and the eye is black not yellow. The lower mandible is grey and horn-coloured but has become black by the time the Macaw is one year old.

  • The eye colour turns from light grey, to light yellow to brighter yellow by the age of about three years.
