Common Name: White Water Buffalo

Scientific Name: Bubalus bubalis

Class: Mammals

Diet: Herbivore

Size: Height around 200 cm and weight is 1200 kg

Average Lifespan: Around 25 years

Origin: Asia

Conservation Status: Endangered (IUCN Red List 1986)

Physical Description

  • This is the large animals are somewhat cow in appearance, with stout bodies and thick horns.

  • Their horns extend outwards from their heads, and then point back towards their shoulders. They are quite heavy animals.

Habitat

Swamps, grassland, savannas, lowland floodplains, glades and mixes forests. (Never far from water)

  • There have 130 million domestic buffalo exist in the world.

  • They are the great swimmer and can run fast.

  • White water buffalo spend much of their time in water to keep cool and to remove parasite, flies and small insect.

  • They are used for plow the rice paddies because rice fields are under water, they are perfectly adapted to working in these semi-aquatic environment.

  • Their horns are used to protect them against predators.
